PE

Introduction

The PE department is committed to enabling all our students to progress and achieve improved levels of physical fitness during their time at KPHS. We know that regionally this is a key need for the citizens of Rochdale with child obesity being almost 4% higher than nationally. We’ve created a challenging and dynamic curriculum that holds high standards and expectations for our students and that can help them to be healthy and happy citizens.

We know that sport and fitness link closely to mental health and wellbeing and through our wide variety of taught sports and opportunities to engage in teamwork and communality, that this will help them far beyond their time at Kingsway.

Through our core values we strive for all our students to thrive during their time in PE at KPHS.  We teach the importance of nutrition and how this impacts performance and health, alongside teaching training programmes and athletics.

How PE Supports Our School Values

We Co-operate
We teach co-working through teamwork, effective coaching, teaching mutual respect, developing effective communication skills, and encouraging others to achieve their personal best. Students always help with setting up equipment, officiating, and Sports Leaders practise leadership skills in running events. Throughout their time at KPHS, they will work in teams for sports such as rugby, football, handball, hockey, cricket, softball and rounders

We Pioneer
When we enter competitive sports at a regional level, we always want to strive to improve our performance and a chance to put the school on the local map.  We have had many successes in sports such as football.

We Belong
We encourage all our students to take part, get involved and to recognise others’ strengths and skills. We celebrate our students’ achievements through Sports Ambassadors Awards, Star of the Lesson and sharing our teams’ wins during achievement assemblies.  We know that recognising students’ progress in sport is key to developing lifelong confidence in health insight and fitness. This is extremely important to us at KPHS.

What our students say…

"When I was completing my coursework for Nutrition and Sports Performance, it gave me an insight into a greater understanding of how nutritional behaviours can be managed to improve sports performance. This has now helped me to have a healthier and more balanced diet at home, as I have a thorough understanding of the nutrients needed in a nutrition plan."

"I really enjoyed the Principles of Training coursework unit. I learnt about how to design, plan and evaluate a fitness training programme. When I leave school, I want to join a gym because I now know how to plan effective fitness sessions."

"When I was being taught the exam unit on Reducing the risk of sports injuries, I learnt so much about different factors which influence the risk and severity of injuries, and also about different medical conditions. I now feel more confident if I needed to help with an injury on a family member or friend.”
