Geography
Introduction
Our Geography curriculum at KPHS is designed to inspire curiosity about the world while equipping our students with the knowledge and skills to understand their place within it. We want to develop confident, informed, and responsible global citizens who can interpret, question, and engage with the complex relationships between people, places, and environments.
We begin by grounding students in core geographical skills, enabling them to locate, describe, and interpret the world through maps and spatial thinking. From understanding population patterns in the UK to exploring the diversity of continents such as Asia, students build a secure sense of place at local, national, and global scales. This foundational knowledge allows them to recognise how physical and human processes interact to shape where and how people live.
As our students progress, they deepen their understanding of physical geography through the study of key processes such as glaciation, river systems, tectonic activity, and coastal change. They examine how landscapes are formed and managed, and how natural hazards—including earthquakes, tropical storms, and extreme weather—affect people differently across the world. Through real-world case studies, we encourage our students develop empathy and an informed understanding of vulnerability, resilience, and risk.
Human geography is explored through themes of urbanisation, globalisation, development, and resource management. Students investigate why inequality exists, how economies change over time, and how cities such as Rio de Janeiro and Manchester evolve. By examining issues such as migration, regeneration, and the role of transnational corporations, they gain insight into the interconnected nature of the modern world and the challenges of creating sustainable futures.
We want our students to foster a sense of responsibility towards the planet. Through the study of ecosystems, climate change, and resource use, our students are given opportunities to evaluate the impact of human activity on the environment and consider strategies for sustainability. They are encouraged to think critically about global challenges and to recognise their role in shaping a more equitable and sustainable world.
Fieldwork is integral to our curriculum, providing students with opportunities to apply their knowledge in real-world contexts. Through both on-site and virtual investigations, students develop essential enquiry skills - collecting, analysing, and interpreting data to reach informed conclusions.
Ultimately, our Geography curriculum empowers students to think like geographers: to question, to connect, and to care. By the end of their journey, they are equipped not only with academic knowledge, but with the skills and perspectives needed to navigate and contribute positively to an ever-changing world.
How Geography Supports Our School Values
We Cooperate
Through discussion and teamwork when exploring case studies such as urban change, climate hazards, and development, students learn to value different perspectives and build collective solutions to complex geographical problems. We use structured talk opportunities for our students to further their understanding of our world.
We Pioneer
The KPHS Geography curriculum intends to develop pioneering learners by encouraging students to investigate complex real-world issues, question geographical patterns, and form evidence-based conclusions. Through enquiry, fieldwork, and case study analysis, our students learn to apply their understanding to unfamiliar contexts and propose solutions to relevant local and global challenges.
We Belong
Our Geography lessons create a sense of belonging by helping students see how their local area, the UK, and the wider world are interconnected and how they are part of these global systems. By exploring diverse places, people, and environments through case studies and fieldwork, students recognise that geography reflects a range of experiences and identities, helping them feel included in the story of the world around them.
What our students say…
“Geography helps me to understand skills that also help me in my other subjects."
"Geography lets me explore world issues and understand them from all perspectives."
Careers Education, Information, Advice and Guidance (CEIAG) in Geography
Studying Geography develops analytical thinking, problem-solving, risk assessment, and decision-making skills. Students learn to interpret data, evaluate conflicting viewpoints, and apply case study evidence to real-world contexts, preparing them for careers that require understanding people, places, and environments.
