GCSE Textiles
Introduction
At KPHS, our Key Stage 4 Art and Textiles curriculum is designed to develop creative, independent and aspirational students who are confident in expressing themselves through visual arts. We create an inclusive, positive and supportive environment where students are encouraged to experiment, take creative risks and develop pride in their artistic achievements. Through the exploration of a wide range of materials, processes and techniques, students build strong artistic knowledge and practical skills while developing resilience, independence and confidence. Textiles is one of the most vibrant subjects at KPHS.
Students begin Unit 1 coursework by exploring the theme of Natural Forms. Throughout this project, students investigate a variety of hand and machine sewing techniques alongside the work of textile artists, analysing their inspirations, methods and outcomes. As their confidence develops, students begin to direct their own creative journey by selecting artists and themes linked to their personal interests. Teachers support students in researching relevant artists and encourage experimentation with different textile techniques to help students develop highly personal and meaningful responses.
The curriculum promotes aspiration and values progress by encouraging students to take ownership of their work and refine ideas through an ongoing process of investigation, experimentation and reflection. Students are given opportunities to make mistakes, solve creative problems and learn from the design process while maintaining high expectations of behaviour, effort and presentation. Enrichment opportunities, including exploring local textile artists and exhibitions, help students connect their learning to the wider creative world and understand the value of the arts within society and future careers.
In Unit 2, students complete the NEA, where they independently respond to a chosen sub-theme from a broad starting point. Students deconstruct themes, investigate ideas and work through all assessment objectives to produce a final personal outcome. Teachers guide students through the process while encouraging independence, creativity and critical thinking. By the end of the course, students leave with the confidence to communicate ideas visually, the resilience to refine and improve their work, and the creative skills needed for further education, employment and the creative industries.
How Textiles Supports Our School Values
We Co-operate
Students develop co-operation through collaborative discussions, peer feedback and shared creative experiences within the textile classroom environment. By discussing artists, techniques and ideas together, students learn to respect different perspectives and support one another throughout the creative process.
We Pioneer
The curriculum encourages students to take creative risks, experiment with materials and develop independent artistic responses. Through investigation and personal exploration, students build resilience, originality and the confidence to express their own ideas creatively.
We Belong
Art and Textiles provides an inclusive environment where every student can develop their own artistic identity and feel valued for their creativity. Through personal projects, supportive teaching and opportunities to explore diverse artists and themes, students gain confidence and a strong sense of belonging within the department and quickly gain recognition for their talent within the wider school.
