GCSE Photography
Introduction
At KPHS, our GCSE Photography curriculum is designed to develop creative, confident and independent students who can communicate ideas visually through photography and digital media. Our Photography curriculum encourages students to experiment with a wide range of photographic techniques, processes and technologies while developing resilience, determination and artistic confidence. Through practical exploration and critical investigation, students build strong visual literacy skills and gain an understanding of photography as both an art form and a powerful means of communication.
Students begin year 10 by exploring the themes of Natural Forms and Architecture, investigating a variety of artists and photographers whose work inspires their own creative development. Through carefully sequenced projects, students learn how to use DSLR Canon cameras confidently, exploring shutter speed, aperture and camera settings to produce purposeful photographic outcomes. Students also develop digital editing skills using Adobe Photoshop, experimenting with image manipulation, layering and creative editing techniques alongside practical paper manipulation processes.
The curriculum provides students with opportunities to engage with photography beyond the classroom through enrichment experiences such as visits to Victoria Baths and MediaCityUK. During these visits, students capture photographs of both ageing and contemporary architecture, using their own imagery as source material for GCSE coursework. These experiences help students connect artistic practice to the wider world while developing observational skills and creative independence.
As students gain confidence, they begin to create increasingly personal and independent projects, selecting themes, editing techniques and photographic approaches that reflect their own interests and artistic identity. Teachers facilitate and guide students’ creative journeys, encouraging experimentation, reflection and refinement while maintaining high expectations of behaviour, effort and presentation.
In year 11, students complete the Edexcel Externally Set Assignment (NEA), independently responding to a chosen sub-theme from a broad exam board brief. Students investigate ideas, explore creative processes and develop a personal and meaningful final outcome while meeting all assessment objectives. Throughout the course, students are encouraged to take risks, learn from mistakes and understand that progress comes through perseverance, creativity and critical reflection.
How Photography Supports Our School Values
We Co-operate
Photography at KPHS encourages students to think creatively, experiment with new techniques and develop original visual responses. Through independent projects, digital editing and practical photography, students build resilience, confidence and the determination to refine and improve their ideas.
We Pioneer
The students in our classes develop positive relationships through collaborative discussions, peer critiques and shared creative experiences. By supporting one another through practical tasks, editing workshops and coursework development, students learn to communicate effectively and value different artistic perspectives.
We Belong
We pride ourselves on our curriculum creating an inclusive environment where every student can develop their own artistic voice and feel valued for their creativity. Through supportive teaching, enrichment opportunities and personal creative exploration, students develop confidence and a strong sense of belonging within the photography department.
