GCSE Health & Social Care
Introduction
At KPHS, our Key Stage 4 BTEC Health and Social Care curriculum is designed to give students a secure understanding of human development, health, wellbeing and the wide range of opportunities available within the health and social care sector. We encourage our students to develop compassionate responses, reflective responses and to be knowledgeable learners who can apply their understanding to real-life situations. Through the study of people, services and care practices, students build empathy, resilience and communication skills while preparing for further study, employment and active participation within society.
Students begin by exploring human growth and development across the six life stages: infancy, early childhood, adolescence, early adulthood, middle adulthood and later adulthood. They study physical, intellectual, emotional and social (PIES) development while examining how factors such as health, culture, relationships, life experiences and socioeconomic background influence wellbeing and development over time. Through case studies and practical tasks, students apply theoretical knowledge to realistic scenarios, helping them develop analytical thinking and evidence-based decision making.
The curriculum also develops students’ understanding of the health and social care sector and the services that support individuals with different needs. Students investigate primary, secondary and tertiary care services, allied health professionals, social care and voluntary organisations while exploring the barriers individuals may face when accessing support. Through the study of the seven care values - including dignity, safeguarding, confidentiality, anti-discriminatory practice and effective communication - students understand how person-centred care supports positive outcomes for individuals and communities.
Students further explore factors affecting health and wellbeing, including physical, emotional, lifestyle and economic influences. They learn how to interpret health indicators such as BMI, blood pressure and peak flow and develop personalised health improvement plans using SMART targets and realistic support strategies. Practical coursework, Pearson Set Assignments (PSAs), mock assessments and supervised assessment tasks help students build organisation, research and written communication skills while developing confidence in applying knowledge independently.
Educational visits to places such as the University of Huddersfield and Thackray Museum of Medicine provide students with meaningful insight into healthcare careers, university pathways and the development of medicine and healthcare over time.
How Child Development Supports Our School Values
We Co-operate
Health and Social Care at KPHS encourages students to work collaboratively through discussion, case study analysis and practical scenarios. Students learn to communicate respectfully, consider different perspectives and understand the importance of teamwork when supporting individuals with diverse needs.
We Pioneer
Our KS4 curriculum encourages students to think critically about health, wellbeing and care provision while applying theory to real-life situations. By developing personalised support plans and exploring solutions to barriers in healthcare, students become independent problem-solvers who can make informed and compassionate decisions.
We Belong
Our students develop a strong understanding of inclusion, equality and person-centred care through the study of the seven care values. By exploring diverse life experiences and support needs, students learn the importance of dignity, empathy and belonging for every individual within society.
