Rochdale Local Authority wish to ensure that we all understand the needs of our International New Arrivals and that these needs remain high profile. In particular, they are focusing on those students coming from abroad and attending primary school. To this end, the LA invited KPHS students to work with M6 Theatre Company and Kilogramme Animation Studio to create an animation that illustrated the thoughts and feeling of INAs as they go to a British school for the first time. The intention is that this animation will be used with students in school in advance of a new student joining the school, to help alert local students to the needs of the new arrival.
Seven students who were familiar with this experience worked together to create a joint story, outlining the memories they had of that time. Along the way they identify the things that helped them and things that others could do to help them settle in.
This script was shared with Kilogramme who worked with the students to represent their story.
The final animation has been very well received up and down the country with many local authorities saying they would like to make use of it and the accompanying teacher activities.
The students are very proud of what they have created: receiving congratulations from councillors, authority figures and other local dignitaries.
The students have been asked to attend Rochdale Primary Heads group next week, to share their experience of making the animation and what it means to them.
