About MFL

We have four specialist teachers making our Language Department a vibrant and lively place. There are always games and songs amongst the many language acquisition activities. Our vision is to continue to improve student outcomes and to get all our students speaking in the language they are learning. We aim to offer students a series of valuable experiences that cover the different aspects of learning.

The MFL department also supports students to gain an additional qualification who are already fluent in additional home languages if possible. For example, Urdu is offered as an extra-curriculum activity after school.

Year 7 and 8

All students will study either French or Spanish at Kingsway Park High School in Y7 and continue this language in Y8. They will then be encouraged to continue with this language to GCSE.

Home Learning Policy

Home Learning Intent

We set homework in Modern Foreign Languages because it is vital that students learn key words and expressions in French/Spanish. Studies show that regular practise of vocabulary is the best method to be able to retain meaning.

MFL homework will build resilience, organisation and confidence if completed regularly.

Home Learning Expectations

We expect students from Year 7 to Year 10 to complete a vocabulary-building crossword every week using their yellow core vocabulary lists. There is also additional half-termly creative culture research homework for Y7 and Y8 students and online GCSE revision activities for Y9 and Y10 students, who wish to go the extra mile with their language learning.

In Y11, we expect students to prepare and learn their speaking exam conversation banks and to take responsibility in completely past papers at home after their Speaking exam. There are also additional online GCSE revision activities for those who wish to consolidate their learning further.
