Overall Curriculum Goals

1.       To investigate artists, crafts people and photographers who are making work now, in the UK and around the world.

2.       A full electronic PowerPoint portfolio of own photography, both original photographs and edited.

3.       Deconstruction of work through annotating photographs. This is done through artists investigation.

Topic Title: 

UNIT 1 COURSEWORK DEVELOPMENT

Topic Title: 

UNIT 2 EXAM

(40% of entire GCSE)

Topic Intent:

PORTRAITURE

Students will investigate a range of artists that focus on Portraiture in their work. Students will take inspiration from this work and then continue to build up their own primary bank of images which can be drawn, painted or printed.


Students will work in their sketchbook which will be submitted at the end of the course as 60% of the entire GCSE.

Topic Intent: Set by EDEXCEL

Each student will get a choice of topic for their exam in which they will then independently investigate/experiment with artist research, techniques, processes and create final outcomes.

Key Content / Skills:  

  • Drawing.
  • Painting.
  • Printmaking.
  • Textile experimentation.
  • Artist investigation.
  • Graphic experimentation (Photoshop).

Key Content / Skills:  

  • To deconstruct the Unit 2 exam paper and decide on a topic given by EDEXCEL. Topics change each year.
  • To begin analysing the question/topic that students have chosen and to create an action plan on how to approach answering the question visually. (AO3)
  • Experiment with a wide range of media and techniques. (AO2)
  • To investigate various artists that link to the chosen topic. (AO1)
  • To create personal responses to the topic.

Assessment: AO1, AO2, AO3, AO4 – Each Assessment Objective is work 25% (18 marks each) for a total of 72. 

AO1 - Artist investigation – Alana Dee Haynes, Wes Naman, Douglas Alves, Barbara Kruger, Tyler Spangler 

AO2 – Experimentation with materials and techniques

AO3 – Analysing, annotation and recording ideas.

AO4 - Personal responses.

Assessment: AO1, AO2, AO3, AO4 – Each Assessment Objective is work 25% (18 marks each) for a total of 72. 

AO1 - Artist investigation - This will be individual based on the AQA exam paper and the theme students pick. 

AO2 – Experimentation with materials and techniques

AO3 – Analysing, annotation and recording ideas.

AO4 - Personal responses.

Home Learning:

Students are able to access their online PowerPoint coursework portfolio from home (with internet access) through KPHS Kingsnet and through PADLET.

We ask that students access their work from home so they can continue to annotate and present their work. Students can edit their Photography at school (using Photoshop) and then at home they are able to present this work formally.


Students have access to the PADLET resources from home which gives them step-by-step tutorial videos on how to edit and on how to present their work.

Students have opportunities to go on trips during the course, looking at contemporary and modern artists who have inspired the creative world.
