Curriculum Intent

Students at Kingsway Park High School investigate a wide variety of artists and materials/techniques during their KS3 journey preparing them for GCSE. Students will begin their journey with a baseline assessment task at the start of Year 7, allowing staff in the department to identify ability and what strategies need putting in place to ensure all students progress and achieve the best of their ability.

Students will investigate contemporary artists who are currently creating work. Our aim for students to identify how the arts can continue with students into their future educational pathways as well as into their future careers.

Key Stage 3:

• 1 X 60-minute lessons every 2 weeks.
• Classes are mixed ability.
• Work is completed in A4 sketchbooks which are kept at school.
• Assessments are once per half term and the assessment is marked out of 40.
• Progress is monitored and tracked by the head of department and a senior leader
• Homework is set every term via worksheets as well as visual resources available on Padlet
• Awards are given every half term during whole year group assemblies as well as on ClassCharts
• Students in Year 7-9 are welcome to sign up to the Key Stage 3 Art Club which is on Mondays between 2:50pm - 3:40pm

Key Stage 4:

• 5 x 60-minute lessons per fortnight
• Classes are mixed ability
• The examination specification is AQA for GCSE Art and GCSE Textiles. GCSE Photography is taught through EDEXCEL. All GCSE courses are marked 60% Coursework and 40% Independent Assessment (exam)
• Work is completed in sketchbooks, and they will go home regularly – sketchbooks are needed for every lesson in school
• Written feedback and assessment is once per term and will be evidenced on Padlet so parents/guardians can access at home
• Progress is monitored and tracked by the head of department and a senior leader
• Homework is continuous throughout the course as students will be working on various tasks and will have independent tasks to complete.
• Students are able to use the Art department after school between 2:40pm-4pm for teacher support Monday to Friday.
• Awards are given every half term during whole year group assemblies as well as on ClassCharts

Extended Curriculum

Clubs 

• KS3 ART CLUB – Monday 2:40pm – 3:40pm
• Year 10/11 GCSE intervention – 2:40pm-4pm Monday to Friday.

 Extra Support 

• Students have access to all Padlets in the Art Department. These Padlets have tutorial videos of all tasks that we ask students to complete. These tutorial videos can also be accessed from home (internet connection required).

 Experiences

During the GCSE course students will be able to go onto relevant trips that enhance coursework portfolio. E.G. Year 10 GCSE art went to Van Gogh Alive in January 2022, to aid their artist investigation section of the GCSE course.
