Objectives Curriculum

To provide a relevant curriculum which will deliver:

  • Quality arts learning delivered by specialist arts teachers at both Key Stage 3 and 4
  • Equal opportunities, allowing all to succeed
  • A range of arts forms, styles and techniques, including multi- cultural arts

Extended Curriculum

To provide a planned programme of out-of-school activities, offering weekly lunchtime and after school clubs, covering various forms of art, music, dance and drama (and arts technology whenever possible).

To provide an extended curriculum, including

  • An annual cycle of concerts, productions and exhibitions, including combined arts evenings
  • Visits to theatres, galleries and other arts organisations
  • Opportunities to experience the work of professional artists throgh workshops, exhibitions, performances etc. though artists coming into school as well as students seeing them in their professional environment

Community

  • To provide arts activities for the local primary schools and the wider community
  • To promote multi-cultural arts activities, particularly Asian Arts
  • To link with community and professional organisations

The Visual and Performing Arts comprises of Music, Art and Drama. Although they work closely together, each of the arts subjects are taught as discrete subjects, with specialist staff and specialist facilities.

Facilities and Resources

At Kingsway there are the following specialist facilities:

  • 2 music rooms, equipped with a range of instruments, keyboards and computers for music technology, along with various practice rooms and a recording rooms
  • 2 art rooms, fully equipped
  • 2 drama studios, with full lighting rigs and sound systems

The auditorium has state of the art lighting and sound systems for all productions.

Subjects at Key Stage 3

All students have one discrete lesson in each of music, art and drama.

Options at Key Stage 4

Students may select one or more of the CPA subjects. The courses available are:

  • GCSE ART
  • GCSE (9-1) Level 1 and 2 Music
  • GCSE Drama

Enrichment

  • The faculty strongly believe that students should experience Professional Arts as well as having the opportunity to continue their skills and interest through an extensive extra curricular programme
  • Students are given the opportunity to visit Art Galleries and the Theatre to see a range of productions. Visits have included Blood Brothers, A Christmas Carol, Britain’s Got Bhangra and Laila
  • Students can develop their skills in the CPA Department after school. Activites include Art Club, Choir, Percussion and Drama Workshops
  • The local community is important to us and we involve ourselves with them whenever possible
  • We provide specialist workshops in all three CPA subjects to our local primary schools
  • We involve ourselves in performances and music concerts within the community
  • Students participate in ‘Rochdale’s Xmas Factor’
  • The CPA Department works closely together to lead an annual whole school production involving students from Years 7 to 10
  • We welcome local Primary Schools to come and watch matinee performances of our produtions
