Mock Trial

Citizenship Students win Mock Trial Competition

A team of Kingsway Park Citizenship students recently emerged as winners in the mock trial competition R v Davies, in which a student was accused of online harassment. The competition, organised by the charity ‘Young Citizens’, helps to improve young people’s life skills and their understanding of the legal system, giving students an invaluable opportunity to take roles in a court setting, enabling them to explore what careers in law may have to offer.

Students took the roles of prosecuting and defending lawyers, magistrates, witnesses, court officers and the defendant.  Kingsway Park High School emerged the winners after two rounds, defeating 6 other schools, and will be presented with a trophy and winners’ certificates.

Mr Leo Davies, Head of Citizenship, praised the students for their commitment and enthusiasm during the mock trial and added his thanks to Brabners LLP for its sponsorship of the competition entry fee.

Parliament Week Big Assembly

Year 11 Citizenship students had the exciting opportunity to take part in the filming of a promotional “Sowing the seeds of democracy” video for UK Parliament Week which has been shown in schools across the country.  The clip includes interviews with our students demonstrating their ability to articulate their mature understanding of democracy – they are excellent ambassadors for KPHS!

Mike Garry at Kingsway Park High School

The celebrated poet Mike Garry visited our school recently, to work with small groups of our able and talented students from each year group.  Mike led a session on “Relearning to read and write”, helping students re-explore their reading and writing to create a more joyful experience.  Mike’s witty, wise and engaging sessions received an overwhelmingly positive response from students who were keen to know when he would visit again.

Year 8 Visit to Edge Hill University

As part of the Kingsway Aspire programme, thirty Y8 Able and Talented students attended an open event at the Edge Hill University’s Ormskirk campus.  Students took part in interactive lectures and quizzes intended to give them an insight into the student experience, participated in a Q&A session with student guides and enjoyed a tour around the university.  Our students were highly engaged and now have a much clearer idea of university life. The university is keen to widen access to higher education and offers regular on-campus days - we are looking forward to the next opportunity to visit!

Year 11 London Trip Nov 21

Kingsway Year 11 students thoroughly enjoyed their weekend trip to London. The trip got off to an exhilarating start with 528 steps up to the top of the dome of St Paul’s Cathedral, taking in the stunning views of London. Shopping and eating around Leicester Square was followed by the hit West End show “Six”.  After some much-needed rest, the students took to the Thames on a cruise from Tower Bridge to Parliament and then finished their tour at Madame Tussauds, taking selfies with stars.
